How to use conte crayons to create a value study

This is a typical set of conte crayons.

Begin on toned paper. We used brown craft paper.

Begin laying out your composition with the crayon closest in color to your paper.

Add in dark places as you observe them.

And light places as you observe them.

Continue building up values. Use only lines- hatching and cross contour. Do not smudge the conte crayons.

Good use of contour lines to reinforce the forms.

Observe the who composition including the background and negative spaces.

Create a rich dimensional value study by layering lines and values from the conte crayons while leaving the paper as one of your values as well.
