How to understand virtual memory

First you need to understand what RAM is. RAM is a fast temporary type of memory in which programs, applications and data are stored.

Why is ROM needed? ROM stores the instructions for the computer to start up when it is turned on again.

This kind of memory is needed because the computer must be able to obtain instructions from the moment it is switched on and it must know some basic things about the hardware that makes up the machine
