Rom is permanent, non-volatile and read only. This means it can't be edited by the user.
The ROM stores the Boot Program because if it was stored in the RAM the computer wouldn't start up. This is because the RAM is volatile and looses all data after the computer is shut down.
ROM can come in different types. PROM and EEPROM. PROM stands for programmable read-only memory and EEPROM stands for electrically erasable programmable read-only memory.
