How to turn a pebble into gold

Everyone should have an Uncle Fred while growing up. I loved it when Uncle Fred came around to visit. I was proud of his success. His shiny new wingtips and handkerchief said it all.

Best of all, Uncle Fred was a great storyteller and a first class magician. One day, when I was about five, Uncle Fred stopped by to demonstrate an unbelievable act of sorcery.

Uncle Fred proceeded to tell us that we were in for the magic trick of the century. He slowly searched the ground in front of the porch steps until he found the perfect pebble.

Then he crouched down and pointed to the small rock in his palm, letting us examine the pebble so we could verify it was just plain sidewalk stuff.

Uncle Fred pulled out a fancy silk handkerchief from his back pants pocket.

He shook the handkerchief open and carefully placed it over the palm of his hand. He uttered the following incantation: “Abracadabra, puddin’ pie, kiss the girls and make them cry.”

Uncle Fred waited a second or two, and then whipped the handkerchief off his palm. To our sheer amazement, the pebble was gone. In its place sat a gleaming nugget of gold.

Oops, wait a minute. Just one more thing Uncle Fred taught me. When you do this trick, never ever think about a black cat. They bring bad luck. If you think of a black cat, the magic won’t happen.

Get your handkerchief. Place it over the pebble and say, “Abracadabra, puddin’ pie, kiss the girls and make them cry,” and then snap the handkerchief off your palm!
