Make sure you have 3 treats for this command each time you reset your STAY.

Put your dog in sit (see my other guides for help on this). You don't want your dog to lay down because that is a separate command.

This is one of the few times I say my cue word before the dog understands what it means. This is one of those times where you CAN say the word first.

Make a firm, flat hand signal like a stop sign, and say STAY. Make sure you have your three treats in your other hand, ready to deliver!

For quick dogs, your time between treats will be short. You want to make your dog successful, so as long as they're staying for those 3 treats, give them as fast as you need to do they don't jump up.

If the dog is staying, give a treat! If the dog is still staying, give the 2nd treat! If the dog is STILL staying, give your last treat!

Don't forget to release him when you're done!

How you get a nice, long stay from your dog is spacing out the time between the 3 treats.

Don't start walking backwards or moving around your dog until they can stay for a good long while with you in front of them. You can then add distractions and distance IN THAT ORDER.

Remember to make sure your dog is successful before upping the ante. Be sure to check out my other guides!!
