How to solve a maths question

The question: A car costs £3500 plus 22% VAT. How much does the car cost in total?

Then you have to find 22% but we will do that in steps 10% = 350 20% = 700 1% = 35 2% = 70

Then add the 20% with the 2% 700 + 70 = £770

So now we have to add the original price with the extra 22% £3500 + £770 = £4270
