Shrubs such as spirea and weigela can be rejuvenated through pruning. After 2-3 years they become woody and worn out. Flowering is reduced and they get overgrown.
Using hand pruners and pruning shears, cut the entire shrub back to about 6" in height. This is usually done in the fall so they can overwinter properly. Don't be afraid!
This is the same shrub the following spring. Guaranteed to look like a new shrub with lots of flowers. This reduces the need to prune these flowering shrubs in the summer and removing the blooms!
