STEPS
TOOLS
Do not train only a few because you need a well balanced team
Don't train only one type have a balanced type advantage
Have enough Ether and potions so you do not have to waste time going back and forth to the PokeCenter
Carry enough status healers around ie... Burn Heal, Ice Heal, Parlyz etc
Think about how you are going to battle a Trainer, Gym Leader or a member of the Elite Four before you rush in
Ask a friend or someone online at PC to do a trade because a traded pokemon gains 1.5 more exp points than you own and you can use that to your advantage.
When you pick your starter at the start of the game think before you choose because can you find a better and stonger Fire, Grass or Water Pokemon in the wild
Use an Exp Share on a weak Pokemon in your team and battle a wild Pokemon with your fairly strong Pokemon to get the weak ones levels up so it can battle
Last but not least always have a move in your movepool that can either make the opponent fall asleep, get poisoned, burnt or parlyzed
My teams are: Kanto: Pikachu, Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Pidgeot and Alakazam Johto: Meganium, Flareon, Umbreon, Slowking, Girafarig and Ampharos
