Look for empty spots in your flower beds. Try to find an area that has room to grow over time. Dig the holes for your new bulbs with a shovel or trowel.

Space the holes for your bulbs approximately five to ten inches apart. This will allow for appropriate spacing and will prevent overgrowth.

After the holes have been dug, put about a tablespoon of Bone Meal in each hole as fertilizer. Bone Meal is a slow-release mixture of coarsely-ground bones used as an organic fertilizer for plants.

Bone Meal can usually be found at your local nursery or home improvement store.

Buy a variety of bulbs to plant in your flower beds. A few of our favorites include Parrot Tulips, Alliums, Crocus, and Double Daffodils. Mix and match your blooms for a colorful spring display.

Usually, bulbs are planted four to six inches deep. Place three bulbs of the same variety in each hole so that you achieve a full grouping of flowers in the spring.

Tip: Make sure to follow the planting instructions for each variety of bulbs you are planting. These instructions should be found on the package your bulbs came in.

After the bulbs have been placed in the holes, lightly place the dirt back, making sure not to press too hard. If there is no rain in the upcoming forecast, give the bulbs some water at this point.

Tip: It is important you do not plant the bulbs too early in the fall. As a measure of safety, make sure there have been several hard freezes so the bulbs will not sprout until spring.

A hard freeze occurs when the temperature falls near or below 32 degrees at night.
