How to play a ukulele

Just a note: this guide is for right handed ukulele players, playing the ukulele will be harder for left handed people. (youtube has a lot of guides too)

First, you want to be sure that your ukulele is tuned.

If you are sitting when you play, i would strum with all my fingers and rest the ukulele on my lap. If you are standing, you would hold the ukulele with your fingers and strum with your thumb.

You only use the first 5 frets to make most basic chords on the ukulele. A fret is the space between two lines on the ukulele.

To make chords you need to place the fingers if your right hand between different frets.

Let's make a C chord

When pushing the strings, you should use the tips of your fingers for the best sound. You should trim your nail so you don't scratch the fretboard.

If you want to learn a new chord i would look it up on google (so you would type "how to play a C chord" into google images) a chart like this will come up

How to read the chart: there are four vertical lines which stand for the strings, and five horizontal spaces which stand for the frets

So the chart says to use your 3rd finger (count from your pointer to your pinkie) on the 3rd fret from the top, on the A string (aka the fourth from left to right .

When you are forming the chords, try to keep your thumb behind the ukulele, you never should press down strings with your thumb

An app recommendation: i highly suggest buying Chord Genie from the app store, there is a free version, but the full version costs only 3 dollars and is definitely worth your money.

In this app you can basically look up any chord and the app will give you a chart that shows you how to play it, and what it should sound like. You can also tune your stringed instrument with it.

So, did the C chord sound like mine did? If yes, then you can play the ukulele!

What i usually do is look on google for songs to play, chord shark is also a good website with a lot of songs.

This is a good first song, it has 3 chords in it and you already know one of them (sorry for bad picture quality)
