How to paint bluebonnets

To begin, we will draw the outline of you painting. Here I have drawn lines representing the Texas Flag.

The star is a little tricky as it hangs off the canvas for an open composition.

Now two blob shapes that will eventually be blue bonnets overlapping the flag.

Fill in the blobs with smaller tear-drop shapes or ovals to represent flower pedals.

Add a couple stems and leaves at the bottom.

Sorry for the upside down photo. Snapguide doesn't seem to offer a way to rotate images:/ Wet a brush and clean up the chalk areas that were mess-ups.

Use a dry rag or paper towel to dab up the wet chalk.

Now time for color. We begin with white, light blue, and blue acrylic paint.

I am using a 1/2 inch flat head brush. Starting at the top of the bluebonnet, paint some light blue paint on each petal.

For now, keep the paint in the center of each petal.

Now, use the darker blue, keeping it towards the outside of each petal and ,again, working from top to bottom leaving the lighter color in the middle. The wet paints will blend as you paint.

Add a smudge of white to the center of each petal .

Use lime green, and green to paint the leaves and stems.

Clean water.

Use a smaller brush in smaller areas of the painting.

Paint the red section of the flag.

Now add a few white lines near edges of shapes.

and loosely outline everything with black paint of a small pointed paint brush. Notice my outline is not uniform and sometimes doesn't even connect to other lines. That is okay, keep it loose.

Sign it and your all done!
