Brown beef and onion and drain any grease.. I use very lean ground beef so there is virtually no grease left over to drain...

Mix in the mushroom soup and a can of whole milk or 1/2 and 1/2... 1/2 and 1/2 tends to make it creamier but whole milk will work too...

Butter a 9x13 baking dish....

Add your ground beef mixture and even it out in the pan....

Add the tater tots to the top of the mixture...

Layer the tots evenly on top of the mixture... Sometime I make enough tots for 2 layers because the kids love the tots....;-)  Return to oven for about 10 minutes to heat the mixture through....

Top evenly with cheddar cheese and return to oven for appx 10 minutes or until cheese is slightly golden and bubbly....

  • 2 bags tater tots
  • 1/2tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1 16oz bag sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 mushroom soup can of either whole milk or 1/2 an
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
