Gather all the supplies, quantity can be adjusted according to desired amount of popcorn.
Turn the stove to medium. Coat the bottom of the pan with a layer of oil, usually about 1/3 cup or so should be enough for a 12 inch pan.
Place two kernels in the pan as the oil heats and wait for the kernels to pop so you know the oil is hot enough. Warning: hot, splashing oil is dangerous, so keep the pan covered
Once the first two kernels pop you know the oil is hot enough to add the rest of the popcorn about two cups should be enough to make a large bowl of popcorn.
Make sure the pan is still covered with the lid to keep oil from splashing.
It is fun to watch then pan fill up with popcorn and it helps to gently shake the pan while it is cooking to distribute heat evenly.
Remove from heat if all the kernels have popped or there are more than 3 or 4 seconds between pops.
Melt butter in the microwave for about 10 seconds.
Pour the butter over the popcorn one half at a time allowing enough room in the bowl to shake and distribute the butter throughout. Then add desired amount of salt.
Now it's time to enjoy! Try not to eat it all at once.
