Put potato chunks in a bowl and add the butter.  Mix well using a potato masher or a hand mixer as shown.

Add a few splashes of milk, then mix.  Continue in this manner until the potatoes are the consistency you like (less milk for chunky mashed potatoes; more milk for smoother mashed potatoes.)
