Choose the size spool you would like to use. It's fun to combine different sizes.
Use your foam paint brush to paint the spool. Our Thanksgiving schools are painted black...
...and our Christmas spools are painted metallic green.
While your spool is drying, sort through some old buttons to choose 1 or 2 to glue to the spool top. The buttons help to hold the wire loop in place.
Make sure that the wire will fit through the holes on the buttons you choose.
You may want to double up some of your buttons for a decorative effect. Glue them together with E6000, making sure that the holes line up.
Put a bead of E6000 around the hole on the top of the spool, and place the button(s) on top. Let dry.
Use wire cutters to cut a 12-inch piece of wire.
You can form a smaller loop by wrapping the wire in the same way around your glue stick container.
When the button tops are completely dry, you can insert the ends of the wires through the buttonholes. They will stay in place without any glue, but you may choose to add some if you wish.
Our Christmas spool is ready to decorate...
...and our Thanksgiving spool is ready too!
Select the papers that you would like to use on your spool. Papers with strong horizontal designs work well, but any scraps you have will also work.
Cut your paper into strips.
Choose the paper you would like to start with. Gently roll it around your spool. Overlap the ends slightly and trim the extra away.
Continue to coax and roll the paper piece into a curved shape so it will wrap well around the spool.
Rub the glue stick all over the back of your paper.
Wrap the paper around the spool and hold it in place until it sticks together. Continue to add more pieces in the same manner until you're happy with the appearance.
Add your favorite embellishments to decorate your spool. This one has a little flag wrapped with bakers twine.
You can add little flowers, rhinestones, twine....
....felt snowflakes, or any other little embellishment that suits your fancy!
When you are done with your spool decorating, print the Thanksgiving template from our blog: http://goo.gl/AJrVvP, and add names or thankful words to decorate your Thanksgiving table.
