How to make artsy 3d wall decor

This is what we are aiming to make.

Find a stencil you want to use for the main design. I printed mine from my computer but you could trace yours onto wax paper with a sharpie for an easier time.

Cover design in painters tape. Do NOT push down to hard if using regular paper. You want to be able to pull it up soon. Using as few pieces of tape as possible leads to better results.

Using an x-acto knife or hobby knife on cardboard, cut the painters tape in the pattern of the stencil.

Carefully peel out the design from the painters tape and place it on your scrapbook page where you want it to appear.

You should be left with this. Save it.

Mark the paper at 1/2 inch on two edges of a side.

Connect the two points with a ruler used to guide your x-acto knife as you shave off an even 1/2 inch. Repeat for one adjacent side. ALWAYS use care with sharp objects.

Feel free to paint the sides of your canvas. I chose not to this time.

If you do not have experience with mod podge, you may want to look up tips and tricks online before starting this step. Add a layer of mod podge to your canvas. I prefer fabric (blue) mod podge here.

Carefully position your scrapbook page and quickly smooth it for 2 minutes or more while it initially dries. Set aside, but keep an eye out for wrinkles.

Go back to your stencil and remove the paper under the painters tape we removed earlier. You may need to cut it in some places.

Position on a nice piece of cardboard or foam board and tape down.

Paint through stencil supporting it where needed. Remove stencil when done.

Cut out decal with scissors in easy spots and x-acto knife in tricky areas. Cardboard and foam board are difficult to cut through. Use caution. Set aside.

Mix paint with a very small amount of water.

Use sponge, paint brush, fingers, anything to get some cool messy look to your project. I like to flick puddles of paint that form to add to the splatter look. Let dry overnight.

Paint to define edges where paint did not fall. I use a discreet semi-transparent silver that will not be noticed.

Remove painters tape. Mine tore a little because I was not gentle.

Mix a lighter version of your scrapbook page and add some water to make somewhat transparent.

Paint in thin layer where painters tape was.

Add a layer of mod podge (I used matte finish) and quickly stick your foam board or cardboard decal slightly to the right of your light shadow. Flip over on wax paper or firmly press onto canvas.

I put books on mine.

Reveal finished product. Yay!
