Create a cutout heart. Lay it on the shirt and place pins around it to trace your pattern. Pin only through the first layer. This will help keep you from cutting through the underlayer.
Add pins down the center so you are reminded not to cut past the middle line. That's the spine of the heart.
Cut small horizontal snipits where each slit will be. This helps start the cuts by having a place to insert the scissors.
This is what happens to the heart without a spine. This one was the first attempt.
Cut slits between the pins. The longer the slits, the more drape you'll get.
