First, gather all supplies; put pump in pot with a bit of water and press so suction cups on pump adhere to pot.
Add large rocks
Don't forget to add the discharge adapter and a short tube (center); add more rocks
Insert artificial plant (forgive my sideways images ;->)
Add more rocks making sure not to clog tubing; fill with water; play with rocks until you get a nice sound of water over them when you plug in the pump.
Put in a place where you will enjoy the soft gurgles. Plug in. I like mine in my meditation room. Make sure you keep the water level up so you don't burn out the pump.
