How to make a pinwheel for peace

First you need a square of paper. If you don't have a square, here is an easy way to make one. Take the top right corner of your paper (left if you are left handed).

Bring the corner in your hand to the opposite side of the paper. The top edge of your paper should line up with the side edge.

Once the edges are lined up neatly, pass your hand over the fold to crease it.

Use your scissors to trim off the extra rectangle of paper.

Now you should have a folded triangle.

Unfold your triangle. You should now have a square.

In order to find the center of the square, fold the square in half again. We want to make a folded "X" on our paper.

Unfold your paper. You should now have an "X" made out of your folds.

Now use your drawing supplies to create a bold design on one side of your paper. Remember that these are going to be outside. You want the design to be visible.

When you are finished, turn your design over.

Now write your thoughts about peace. This can be about inner peace, world peace, how to promote conflict resolution, anything that you think is important.

Once you have finished, I recommend refolding your creases so that you can see them.

Line up your ruler from one corner to the opposite corner. From corner to corner, my diagonal measured 12 inches.

From each corner, draw a line that measures about 1/3 of the entire diagonal. My diagonal is 12 inches, so I drew a 4 inch line from each corner.

Use your scissors to cut the lines you just drew.

Use a thumbtack to carefully poke a hole in the center of your square.

Now use that thumbtack to poke a hole onto every other corner. Be careful not to poke it too close to the edge because it may cause your corner to rip. If this happens, just use some clear tape.

Bend every other corner, the ones with holes, to the center of your square until it looks like this.

Put your thumbtack through the four bent tips and the center hole.

Now poke the thumbtack into the eraser of your pencil. You want it to be secure, but not so close that your pinwheel can't spin. If the tip of the thumbtack goes through, you have gone too far.
