First you need a square of paper. If you don't have a square, here is an easy way to make one. Take the top right corner of your paper (left if you are left handed).

Bring the corner in your hand to the opposite side of the paper. The top edge of your paper should line up with the side edge.

Once the edges are lined up neatly, pass your hand over the fold to crease it.

Use your scissors to trim off the extra rectangle of paper.

Unfold your triangle. You should now have a square.

In order to find the center of the square, fold the square in half again. We want to make a folded "X" on our paper.

Line up your ruler from one corner to the opposite corner. From corner to corner, my diagonal measured 12 inches.

Use a thumbtack to carefully poke a hole in the center of your square.

Put your thumbtack through the four bent tips and the center hole.

Now poke the thumbtack into the eraser of your pencil. You want it to be secure, but not so close that your pinwheel can't spin. If the tip of the thumbtack goes through, you have gone too far.
