I've already stitched the skirt, so I will not be able to show it to you step by step, but I have illustrated the steps.

I wanted to make a sheer maxi skirt but you can even make a normal one. First measure from your waist or hip, where ever you would want your skirt to sit, till the ground or ankle.

Keep an extra 1inch at the bottom to fold and hem and keep double the width of you elastic on top. So all together keep about 5-6inches extra.

The horizontal measurement is atleast 1meter.

Now stitch both the pieces togethe. Stitch the vertical sides together so as to make a tubular shape. And hem one of the openings.

This is how the two pieces are attached vertically. I used a red thread so its hard to make out the stitch in this picture.

Hem the bottom opening. So it looks neat.

Next, take your elastic and put it around your waist/hip. Do not stretch it too much also. And cut it.

Now on the other opening of the skirt which will be your waist, fold over the fabric and stitch it according to the width of the elastic. And keep an opening, through which you will put the elastic.

This is the pocket you need to make to put the elastic in. Gathers will be formed because your waist is smaller than the other end of your skirt.

Next attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and start putting it inside the pockets opening. Remove it from the other end and overlap the elastic by an inch and stitch it.

Close the opening. And your skirt is ready! Make sure you keep the open gap sufficiently big so as to put the elastic in.

Since my skirt is sheer I wear a long tube top as a skirt inside. If your fabric is not sheer then you don't need anything.

It is very simple and take very little time to make, don't let my sketches make you hesitant on the difficulty of this DIY.

The final piece looks like this.

  • 2.0m Cloth
  • Scissors
  • Sewing maching
  • Measuring tape
  • Elastic
