Geocaching is a fun, real-world outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices to navigate to specific GPS coordinates to attempt to find the Geocache (container) hidden at that location.
WARNING: SPOILER ALERT AHEAD...now to show you how I made my Geocache. I love finding fun caches so I'm hoping this inspires more people to hide original, unique geocaches of their own.
Find a really cool log and cut the top off at the desired length.
Drill a hole in the bottom piece big enough to fit the container you will use in it.
Drill a hole in the top piece big enough to fit the top of the container in. Smooth out holes with a dremel tool.
Drill small holes in the bottom piece around the edges and insert small metal rods. Drill holes in the top at the exact locations as the rods on the bottom. This holds the top on when put together.
Place small rubber caps on top of the rods. This is a side view of the log with the container it was built for.
Make sure the hole is the correct size for the container your using.
Be sure that the top & bottom of the log makes a good seal with the container in it.
Coat the whole log inside and out with clear water-seal spray.
Drill 3 holes in the bottom of the log and insert rebar stakes. Cut the rebar so they stick out apx 6 inches. This allows you to push the stakes in the ground and stable the log from tipping over.
Decorate the geocache container as desired. Mark it as an official Geocache with muggle instructions. Fill with a log book, a lot of COOL swag, and a FTF prize!!
I added corresponding numbers to the top and bottom so geocachers could put it back together correctly and easily. I glued moss around the saw cut to help disguise it.
Place the assembled Geocache at the hidden location.
Put a GPS on the cache & record the coordinates. Walk a few feet away & put the GPS back. Repeat this process at least 10 times. Take the average of all 10 coordinates to use as the listed location.
Take the extra time to average out the coordinates as explained to avoid this!!! LOL.
Post your new cache to geocaching.com. Always leave a hint to help fellow geocachers find it, even if you think it is not hard. A very easy cache is sometimes very difficult with a jumpy GPS!
