Visit a craft store and gather cake decorating supplies for your project
Take fun side trips to gather ingredients for your cake - kids will learn where their food comes from!
If you want a gluten-free cake, go to a co-op or health food store for ingredients
To ensure that your cake does not stick to the pan, grease it with vegetable oil, dust it with corn meal, and then line it with parchment paper.
Mix the batter. Have the kids do the math to figure out proportions for the amount of ingredients for two layers each of 6, 8, and 12 inch cakes.
Let the cake sit for 10 minutes in the pan and then take it out and let it completely cool on a rack
It will likely take 2-3 days to make all the cakes. Wrap up and freeze the cakes you made on days 1 and 2. Cut out round cardboard plates to use to keep them flat.
When all cakes are cool, make frosting.
Frost the first layer
If you want, you can add fruit in between the layers of the cakes.
Place fruit evenly on frosting.
Pipe frosting around edges then put the second layer on top of the first tier.
Measure the height of your first tier and cut 8 lollipop sticks slightly longer than the height.
Put lollipop sticks in first tier to support second tier. Put frosting on top. Place a 8" cardboard plate on top of the sticks and add a dab of icing before putting the first 8" cake on top of it.
Make sure all the layers are the same height and even by cutting off the tops of cake layers at a specific height.
Repeat the same steps for the second and third tiers as the first tier.
Frost the entire cake. At this point you can choose if you just want frosting or you want to decorate with fondant. Fondant is fun with kids because it's a lot like playdough, except a lot tastier.
If you choose to use fondant, roll it out on parchment paper.
Make the slab as large and thin as possible.
Place the fondant on the cake.
Use colored fondant to make decorations. You can use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and stick them on with frosting.
Take a glory shot.
