This guide was made assuming you know the basic hand stitches. If you don't, either view my guide on basic hand stitches or Google them.

Here's what you'll need (plus stuffing). I know, it's a lot.

Make a template for the main body that looks like this. The height should be twice the width (I used 6x3 inches).

Try to make it as symmetrical as possible. Also try to make the pointed ends a 90 degree angle, or as close to that as possible.

For the tentacles, make a template a little bigger than your thumb.

Trace four body shapes, and eight tentacle shapes (duh, it's an octopus).

Trace eight tentacle shapes onto another color of felt. (I like to use a darker shade of the main color.)

Cut EVERYTHING out.

If you're going to hand sew, feel free to cut right on the lines. If you are going to use a sewing machine, use a straight stitch and add a 1/4 in seam allowance.

Line two of the body pieces up (right sides facing in).

Sew a blanket or back stitch along one edge.

Line up another body piece. Sew a blanket stitch on the edge.

When sewing the last edge, make sure to leave a 1-2 inch hole to turn it inside out.

Stuff the body and stitch it closed.

Line up two different colored tentacle pieces.

Sew around the edge with a blanket stitch (minus the bottom).

Turn the tentacles inside out. (Use a pencil to help you if necessary.)

Stuff all of the tentacles (you can stitch them here as well but I prefer just to stitch them together and close them at the same time).

You can also pin the tentacles to the body (just be sure not to let the pin touch the glued area, or it won't come out).
