These are the things you need.

First make the wire streight.

Bend the wire into roughly this shape.

I suggest starting off symmetrical. This piece of wire is too long. The ends should reach about 1.5 cm (1/2 inch) below the end of the battery.

Mind the tiny kink on the top. The wire is going to spin on it.

Bend the ends in opposite directions.

Then give them a slight curve. The circle formed by them should be about the size of you magnet.
