STEPS
TOOLS
Find a wood pallet that features straight edges. Wood that's slightly aged (or at least looks like it) can add a distinctly original style.
Select the pieces you want and remove them from the pallet, making sure to also take the nails out.
Mark the places on the boards where you'd like to make cuts.
Using a circular saw, cut the boards to the desired length.
Connect the wood pieces by hammering a gang plate at each corner.
Now it's time to get creative. Choose the color or colors you'd like to use. Combine colors for a truly customized appearance, or add some water for a distressed look.
In between coats, consider using coarse sandpaper or wire brush to add texture.
Using thin Masonite as your surface, apply a thick coat of chalkboard paint and allow it to dry. You may need to apply multiple coats.
Lay the Masonite down and nail it to your frame.
Now you have a brand new, homemade chalkboard that the entire family can use.
