The tech tool is not the first consideration, it is important to bear in mind what the learning outcomes are; what should the students be able to do by the end of the lesson?

What could the students create, using technology, that would allow them to apply their knowledge and construct and share their understanding? Is the task going to allow for deep and rich learning?

BLOOMS, TPACK, SAMR, RATL, Maslow, the 4 C's of 21st century learning are just some of the theoretical frameworks that teachers should be aware of as points of pedagogical reference.

Kathy Schrock has extensive resources for teachers to turn to. I also find a lot of good work has been done by Lisa Johnson and Susan Oxnevad. Their material has certainly helped me.

I think TPACK is a highly effective planning tool as teachers must consider the interplay between the 3 knowledge frames - content, pedagogy and technology - in order to plan tech integration.

It is important that we do not just assume that a particular app or task hits that level of BLOOMS or SAMR; it really comes down to what is evidenced when students start applying and sharing.

Finally this is how I see successful tech integration: -all students are active participants of their own learning -tech tools are used authentically to help students become digitally literate

-students engage in tasks that encourage higher order thinking -tech has a vital role in achieving the learning outcomes -tech brings the world into the classroom -tech takes students into the world

-tech integration is instruction orientated -tech supports students with personalizing and differentiating their learning -tech gives teachers immediate formative feedback -metacognition is key
