First of all, gather you supplies. The knife can be substituted for any other metallic utensil. The shorter the utensil, the better.
Pour your water into the glass and insert the knife with the pointed end down
Grab the glass and place the handle of the knife on the bridge of your nose
Drink the water with the handle of the knife on your nose to the best of your ability. The taller the glass and the shorter the knife, the easier this step is.
Your hiccups should be gone by now. This has always worked for me, but I'm not sure why. It could be psychological, or it may involve the way your head is tilted back when you drink the water.
