Fill a pot up with potting soil. Make a hole the size of your starter plant (basil) in your pot of soil Pack all of the soil around it.
This is what it should look like when your done
Cut right where the leaves stop growing
Hang upside down using your string to tie it on something to dry.
When it is completely dry, crumble it up and your done.
