Open a stock iPhone app (an app that comes with the phone) Music is a good one too.
Once you've opened the stock app, hold down the top button and wait until the "Slide to Power Off" screen pops up. (Stay at the screen, do not slide the slider.)
Now hold down the home button until the app force quits and returns to the home screen.
