Begin with grid paper.
Draw a simple tessellation. A series of repeated shapes that fit together perfectly with out overlapping or leaving empty spaces in between.
I changed one edge of each shape.
Add other shapes within the design to add complexity.
Outline with sharpie pen.
Erase those pesky pencil marks.
Ooooo, nice. Time for color.
Use color wisely to emphasize pattern.
Contrasting colors make for a BOLD look.
Ta Da!

Crossing lines to make triangles and squares.
Add smaller details within.
