How to distribute

Look over each slide. Take your time.

In this problem we do inside the parentheses first, we get 4 + 6 = 10. Then multiply 2 times 10 and the answer is 20.

If you "distribute" the candy you need to make sure EVERYONE gets a piece. "Distribution" means to distribute the 2 by multiplying times EVERY number in the parentheses.

2 ( 4 + 6 ) means 2 times 4 plus 2 times 6.

8 + 12 = 20. Just like 2 times 10 = 20 !!

It also works with subtraction in the parentheses.

Distribute 3 times 10 and 3 times - 2.

Use a separate piece of paper to work the problems.

Multiply the outside number times EVERY number in the parentheses.
