Heather asked for a tutorial for the ripple stitch. It's a popular stitch for baby blankets, afghans and dish clothes. :)

i'm going to show you the first 3 rows (it's just repeating after that) and i also have a diagramm...

that's the diagramm. if you can't read it no worries i'll guide you through :) now let's get started :)

i'm going to do a small swatch, not a full sized blanket, therefore i chain 32. (chain 130 to get a good size)

ok 32 chains. yarn around and insert your hook in the 4th chain from your hook.

first double crochet made. make 5 more double crochets in the next 5 chains.

you have your chain 3 and 6 double crochets.

now comes a special stitch called double crochet 3 together (dc3tog): i'll show you step by step -->

start like normal double crochet in the next chain. pull up a loop like you normally would for it. yarn around again and pull through the first 2 loops on you hook.

leave this stitch unfinished with 2 loops left on the hook. yarn around again and start a new double crochet in the next chain.

yarn around and pull through the first 2 loops, but leave this stitch unfinished as well.

and we do this one more time (3 loops on your hook now). yarn around and insert your hook in the next chain, pull up a loop. then pull trough the first 2 loops again.

ok good. 3 unfinished stitches on the hook (4 loops). now we finish them :) yarn around and pull through ALL loops on the hook.

tada :) now make 5 more double crochets in the next 5 chains. (no worries if it feels kinda thight, this stitch will be the first ripple point)

it's actually just an increase. work 3 double crochet in 1 chain. this will be the inwards bent ripple.

i have one chain left now. if you make a larger size blanket you keep repeating the shell now. at the end of your first row (independently of the size) you will have this one chain left...

... we are going to work 2 double crochet into this last chain.

if you want to change colors, leave the second one of the last 2 double crochets half finished. yarn around the new color and finish the stitch.

in this pattern the turning chain counts as a stitch. therefor we will work the last 2 stitches into the 3rd chain. (that's the loop on the far top) (violet pin)

if you want to change the color again just do like between the 1st and 2nd row. if not: just finish the second double crochet, chain 3, turn and keep working :)
