Loosely crochet a chain of 18.
Slip stick through the first stick making sure to not twist the chain.
Chain 3 to make the first double crochet (dc).
DC in second chain stitch and each remaining chain stitch 17 times for total of 18 DC. Slip stick through the 2nd chain of original chain 3 to finish the row.
Chain 3 to make the first DC for next row.
1 DC in top of next DC. In next DC crochet 2 DCs. DC in top of each of the next 2 DCs and then 2 DCs in the next one DC. Continue pattern of DC in each of next 2 and then 2 of DCS in next to end.
Slip stick through 2nd chain for chain 3 to complete row.
Chain 3 to created first DC and DC in top of each of the DCs. Slip stick through chain 2 of chain 3 to finish row.
Chain 3 to create first DC.
DC in top of next DC. Then insert hook through to of next DC and grab yarn.
Pull one loop through top of DC for a total of 2 loops on hook.
Insert hook into top of next DC and pull up another loop for a total of 3 loops on hook.
Grab and loop and pull through 2 loops, grab a loop and pull through remaining 2 loops to create a decreasing DC.
DC in each of next 2 DC and then repeat step 13 to create another decreasing DC. Repeat 2 DC and 1 decreasing DC until end.
Slip stitch through 2nd of 3 chain 3 to complete round.
To creat tail chain 3.
SC in first chain.
Go through top of DC and ...
Top of DC on the other side of tail and slip stitch to start the back of chick.
Repeat 5 times for a total of 6 slip stitches.
To create a hen go through top of DC on both sides of chick and SC. To create a rooster go to step 40.
Yarn over and go through the same tops and pull loop through all 3 loops to
HDC.
Go through tops of next set of DCs and DC and TC in them.
So you have a DC and a TC in the same tops.
Go through tops to next set of DCs. TC and then DC in them. Finish with a HDC in the last set of tops.
Tie off and weave in ends.
To make the beak use F hook and a contrasting color yarn. Leave a long tail on yarn and don't work in end.
Insert hook through the hole between the DC and the HDC.
Catch yarn and slip stitch around the HDC post.
SC 3
SC in the chain closest to the HDC post.
This should create a small triangle.
Insert hook into hole between DC and HDC.
Slip stitch making sure that stitch goes over the HDC post.
Tie off and leave a long tail.
Tie the 2 tails together into a knot 3 times. Trim ends very close.
Tuck know into the hole between the HDC and the DC.
Add google eyes - model has 5mm. Use 7mm if yarn is fuzzy. Put chick on plastic egg and viola.
Slip stitch one more time so there are only 2 DCs left.
Chain 3
In same space DC.
2 DCs in next space and then a HDC in the very point.
Pull tight, tie off, and weave in ends.
Follow steps 28-38 for the beak.
To create the crest start in the second DC from the front of the rooster.
Insert hook and slip stitch
Then chain 3
In same space DC.
In next 2 spaces 2 DCs each
In top of chain 3 HDC and then a SC. Pull tight, tie off and weave in ends. Use 6 mm eyes to finish

- G crochet hook for chick body
- Contrasting yarn for beaks &/or crests
- F crochet hook for beaks &/or crests
- Googly eyes
