How to create storytelling dice

Sketch some simple images. Think of various objects, characters, animals, weather and settings. For an alternative to drawings, cut out images from a magazine instead.

Use square blocks of any size. These are one-inch by one-inch that I found at a yard sale. Be sure to paint a lighter base color. I chose yellow, orange and green.

Using your sketched images as a reference draw a different image on each side of the block with a pencil. Next use a light white color paint and fill in the outline. I used sample size interior paint.

Once the paint is dry, outline the image in pen. Here I used a black gel pen.

Very important! Most pen inks will bleed when you apply a clear coat with acrylic medium or spray varnish. But if you use clear nail polish to protect the surface the pen ink doesn't smudge.

Once the clear coat is dry, give them a roll and try out your new source of inspiration for telling stories. Great for road trips or waiting rooms to keep the little ones busy!
