Select three colours polishes that compliments each other

2 coats of one colour, pick one of the lighter ones

Now with the darkest shade roughly paint the tip of the your nail - doesn't have to be perfect!

Like so!

Dump the third colour on to a piece of paper

And use your hair pin or dotting tool if you have one and make connecting dots along the line where the two colours join, again it doesn't have to be perfect!

Add top coat and clean all those messy bits up!
