How to create a weaving on a clay loom

Start with your clay loom ready to go. If you are not at this stage, go back and check out my other snapguide on creating your clay loom.

Take your scissors and nick your Popsicle stick.

Slide a piece of yarn in the nick. I use about 2 arms lengths of yarn.

I tape on the first row of yarn just to hold it in place as I get started.

I often use a double thread early in a weaving.

Just a basic over and under to get you started!

Once you do a few rows of over/under, try over 2, under 2. I did this with the green.

After a few double rows, create a few rows of soumac. It's not hard, but check it out on you tube!! Simply, it's in on one side, flip the yarn up, around the loom and back in one warp thread over.,

After a fancy stitch, you need to do about 10 rows of basic over/under. Then you can try another fancy one. Like tiger stripes. Load two Popsicle sticks with different colors of yarn.

Then starting at the SAME side. Weave one color over and under to the other side, start the next color under/ over! Make sure to catch the other yarn so the stitch doesn't pull!

It's not pictured here, but when I finished tiger stripes, I did a number of rows of basic. Then I'm ready to start rya. Cut some yarn. About a hand width. Place around warp threads like mine.

Pull taut and down onto weft threads that you have woven. Yes, there is a great tutorial for this, go watch it!

After a row of rya, don't forget to "lock it in" with 4 or 5 rows of basic.

See? The rya is encapsulated around the basic rows. Trim the rya threads CAREFULLY!

Once you don't have enough room for your Popsicle stick "needle" you can unbend a paper clip! You will need to tie on the yarn.

On the back, I use my paper clip needle to pull the end through the backside if a stitch to lock my leftover yarn in place.
