What is Pop Art? Developed in the 1950's, challenged traditional "fine art" by including imagery from POP culture (advertising, news,brands/logos, politics).
Roy Lichtenstien: pop artist, painted pictures in a comic book style, added thought bubbles to poke fun at the dramatic nature of his subjects.
Used dots to give the sense of mass produced comics. Bold, solid colors.
Andy Warhol
Used repetition of well known brands and images to mass produce (through silk screen printmaking) his art. Why do you think he used this method?
What brands or images do you think would be used today if he was creating work now?
Who do you think would be the Marilyn Monroe of our time used in his work?
Jasper Johns, another "father of pop art". What aspects of his art are like pop art?
Wayne Thiebaud
What other artist that we have studied, does his work remind you of? Why?
Claus Oldenburg, sculpture
Why could his work be considered part of the pop art movement?
Look familiar?
Could Shepard Fairey's work be considered pop art? Why?
We will create a portrait in this style. You can choose which pop artist you want to style your art after. Who speaks to you as an artist? What do you want to say with your portrait?
Roy Lichtenstein? Dramatic, emotional, bold.
Andy Warhol? Wacky colors, layers of color, repetitive, iconic.
Shepard Fairey? Darker, political or social message, stark and graphic
Jasper Johns? Layers of color, mysterious, expressive.
The first step in creating your portrait will be to trace an outline of your portrait using tracing paper and a sharpie.Make sure you have thick and thin lines to create value and emphasis.
Transfer traced drawing onto final paper, using charcoal.
Next, go over traced lines with sharpie. Clean up. Decide if you want to add a pattern or an image in the background.
Make sure all the lines are cleaned up and bold. Erase any smudge marks or smears.
Begin adding color! You can use watercolor, tempera or acrylic to create the look you want. Be creative and don't be afraid to push those boundaries and try something crazy!
