Type "Disk Utility" in the search field. The App's icon will be the first to appear in the Index. Highlight it,  then click on it (or press the Enter key)...

Upon launch, the console may already be on "Verify" but make sure you are on "Verify" by clicking on the Microscope icon...

Highlight your Primary Drive (may appear as "Macintosh HD")...

Select First Aid (it may automatically be highlighted)...

Click "Verify Disk Pernissions"... This may take a good couple of minutes, so be patient... (Now is your perfect time for a night-cap: A tasty glass of wine, cheers!)...

After you have done the Verify Disk Permissions, click "Repair Disk Permissions"...again, this may take some more time...

Once the Repair Disk Permissions is complete, click "Verify Disk"....then after that is complete click "Repair Disk"...

Once that is complete you should restart your Mac....

Once your Mac restarts, I suggest running an update immediately. From the desktop, click the little black Apple icon (on upper right corner), then highlight and click "Software Update".
