Do your research. There are a few models. If you're getting 3G / 4G, check carriers. Rates and coverage varies Some allow tethering for free.
Pick a location. Apple stores are more fun, but don't rule out other retailers if you're not picky about the config. the line might be shorter at other stores, but also less inventory.
Check open time. Some stores open ahead of normal business hours on launch day. it's probably early. get some coffee so you don't fall asleep and lose your place in line. Scones are nice.
arrive on scene. depending on how fanatical your area is, you need to get there at least an hour ahead of opening. some people wait days! if you're outside, you might need a raincoat!
find the line. a mall location will keep you out of the rain.
make friends. with your neighbors. it's more fun, and you might need them to hold your place for a bathroom break.
talk to a friendly apple person. they'll remind you to recall your Apple ID if you want in store setup.
when it's close to open, some locations hand out cards so you know they have your model in stock while you wait.
hang on to that card! You need it to get your iPad.
clap and whoot when they open the doors!
give them your hard earned money. they would probably take cash, but do you really carry that much on you? high roller!
if you have a pet, let them check it out. then they'll know what a Chinese factory smells like.
savor the opening ritual. Apple puts more thought into their packaging, than most companies do their actual product.
enjoy the new shiny. it may not last long. Apple releases a new iPad every 352 days on average. Taunt your friends about being Luddites.
