Chop off the merlot trunk in winter
Strip the bark from the top quarter of the trunk in the spring.
Cut two notches in the trunk
Take bud of new varietal...
Carefully insert buds from the new varietal into the notch.
Tape the buds in place.
Later in the spring, a shoot will emerge.
It will take a couple years for the vine to produce a full yield.
